Interview:
1) Camron, I want to say thank you for being open to sharing your tunes with me for the blog. I’m really digging your diverse collection, creativity, and style. What does being an artist mean to you?
A) Absolutely! I really appreciate you taking the time to put this together and I’m really excited to answer the questions you’ve prepared.
Being an artist to me is all about expression whether that’s through an original track or with a DJ set. By expressing myself through music I’m able to heal things within myself and hopefully others. One reason I’ve always loved and enjoyed music of all kinds is the ability it gives us to relate to something through frequencies and cadence. Being able to create and express freely is one of the greatest gifts to man! To me being an artist is embodying that idea fully.
2) As you think of the early stages of this journey, who are some of the biggest influences you have had? And what impact did they have on you as an artist?
A) I’m home grown so as much as i want to list my influences musically and some of my idols I really wanna take the time answering this question to give love and pay homage to my best friends and the local legends and big impacts that I’ve had within this musical journey. Utah is so slept on when it comes to DJs and I feel blessed to be able to grace the scene alongside in my opinion some world class people and musicians who’ve taught and mentored me so much about the depths and rooting of what I love so much and have always been about the music and the culture.
So, with that being said I wanna shout out:
13 Swords, Provoke, Johnny Reaper, Kritter, Ricky Mitchell, Drippla, Juliette, tinkFu, Disko Klown, Drink all the NSK homies all the night dropping and the Noc trauma cats, The Smoke Siignals homies and V2. Without them this would all be nonexistent here in Utah and the influence on me and everyone else they have impacted deserves all the respect. All these people Embody just that. Respect.
3) When it comes to cultivating creativity in your music making progress, what are a few things you draw inspiration from?
A) Ya know, with me I’ve always been a DJ first and typically what I DJ is in my opinion a whole different journey and passion for me than let’s say production. For DJing, I’m always watching my friends, my peers, and my idols do their craft. Whether it’s in person, kicking it at shows, at festivals or even live streams. Seeing people get down and really enjoy themselves playing tunes is my favorite and the only time personally I feel zero anxiety.
As far as production goes, I’d say my style is a little all over the place and a little sporadic but that kind of speaks to me. lol. I make music because I enjoy doing it and I think the inspirations I take in that are far more based on where I am mentally and emotionally during that session. The result of that is that my tracks can take on feelings ranging from happy to sad, to trippy to dark and deep. I do however find myself listening to music pretty much 24/7 and take a lot of inspiration and direction from other music I hear.
4) As you think about when you started to where you are now, what are some things you have learned along the way that you feel would be important or impactful for someone who is just starting out?
A) This I feel is something that I take very seriously.
I think people need to just take the leap sometimes. Hit up that promoter hit up your homies hit up that label, put in consistent and honest work and great things happen.
I think doing it for the love of the music and culture should always come first. You should be humble. You should support and contribute to your local scenes growth in whatever way you feel you can. You should be true to yourself and treat people with respect just like any other aspect of life.
And play something I can fuckin dance to!
5) What values do you feel are important to you as an artist and person? How do you feel these values impact the way you approach building your brand?
A) I’m a come as you are type person.
I think honesty, hard work, dedication and the ability to be authentic is the most important.
I think being humble is second. Be someone people can trust. Be someone people can feel comfortable working with and be someone that people can look up to or seek advice from. And be professional.
6) The music scene in Utah seems to be thriving currently, what are you doing to differentiate yourself is such a vast market of producers and DJ’s?
A) As mentioned above I think as a DJ my love for the craft, and for the culture of dance music makes a huge difference in my success. The fact, I love music to its core gives me the ability to play diverse and interesting sets that also represent me.
As a producer I just love to make music, and I think what I make is fresh, original, and representative of me. In that aspect, I hope people enjoy it as much as I do.
7) If you could change one thing about the scene, what is the first thing that comes to mind? And do you feel like you could help have an impact on that?
A) I think having access to more venues would be the best thing for our scene. I also think that it’s important to make sure you’re not just booking the same people for all the events. There’s too much talent in this state that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I think having more places to showcase that the better. I think another thing I wish was a little better was the willingness to go out of your comfort zone and against what’s popular in the big show scene and festival circuit. Take a chance going to local Shows and seeing new artists you’ve never heard. I feel with the collective I helped found: (Camp Limbleshwiften). We try our best with all our shows to bring a diverse and insanely talented showcase every time. We keep our shows cheap for the consumer and patron and focus on what we’re there for and that’s the music and the dance.
8) What are some challenges you have been faced with? And how has that helped you become a better artist?
A) I think just being in Utah is hard. It’s a tough market. There’s lots of people doing shows and lots of stuff going on and enough talent to fill that role ten times over. I think it also creates a need and want to be different and do what you can to stand out and make a name for yourself and build a brand. Complacency is the killer of dreams and i myself refuse to let those die.
I think it also gives people a great opportunity to network. Get out to a lot of diverse shows thrown by a plethora of collectives. Meet and support the people making this all possible so that you can get that support in return.
9) Besides music, what are your interests?
A) I like short walks on the beach lol ah man so many to think of. I love outdoors and anything nature. I love spending time with my friends and family. I love learning new things and have an extensive list of hobbies. Anything artistic, whether it’s doodling or designing flyers, or art for my own music. I love attending all sorts of music events from raves to hardcore/metal shows. I love playing drums and a new soon to be favorite pastime is enjoying being a father!
10) As this interview concludes, is there anyone who you would like to give a shout out to? And maybe share a little bit of why you chose that person.
A) There are way too many people to name and why and I tried to get a lot of that covered previously as far as artists and inspiration goes but really, I’d like to shout out my family, friends, and my wonderful baby momma for always supporting me, my vision, and my dreams even when it doesn’t always seem like the best idea.
To the people who book me to play shows, whether it’s a house party or a festival in another state thank you for giving me the opportunity and chance to express myself through the music I love and for dancing your hearts out. The people who listen to my music thank you for letting me express myself and supporting me in doing so by listening to what i make.
